Broken Country

Broken Country extends a project of experimental geography, rooted in close reading of the literal and cultural landscapes that surrounded Drop City, an alternative community of late 1960s. A seemingly repressed spatial juxtaposition focuses the project: Drop City stood directly across a narrow country road from a functioning public school, built by the WPA as Progressives overhauled public education after the Great Depression. Heuristic methods—including analytical tools from the disciplines as well as language games and nonlinear operations—generate networks connecting these two sites with a range of others, actual and discursive.
